Medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) is a legal, safe, and widely performed procedure in India when carried out under the appropriate medical and legal conditions. Patients in the capital who are considering their options should understand the key aspects of medical termination of pregnancy in Delhi — from the governing law to the clinical process and what to expect afterward.

What the Law Says

The MTP Act, last significantly amended in 2021, permits abortion under defined circumstances. Up to twenty weeks of gestation, termination is permitted with the opinion of one registered medical practitioner. Between twenty and twenty-four weeks, it requires two medical opinions and is limited to specific categories — including rape survivors, minors, those with disabilities, and cases where foetal abnormalities are detected.

Beyond twenty-four weeks, termination is only available in cases of substantial foetal abnormalities, on the order of a Medical Board. These provisions ensure that abortion remains accessible for those who need it most while operating within a structured legal framework.

Who Is Eligible?

Any person with a pregnancy who meets the legal criteria may seek MTP. This includes married and unmarried individuals, and the 2021 amendment removed the previous distinction between married and unmarried women in terms of eligibility. Patients do not generally require spousal or parental consent (with specific exceptions for minors), and they are entitled to confidential care.

Medical Abortion: How It Works

Medical abortion uses a two-drug regimen — mifepristone followed by misoprostol — to safely end a pregnancy. Mifepristone is taken first and works by blocking the hormone progesterone. Misoprostol is taken twenty-four to forty-eight hours later and causes uterine contractions to expel the pregnancy. The process typically takes one to two days and is completed at home in many cases.

A follow-up ultrasound or blood test is performed to confirm that the abortion is complete. The overall success rate of medical abortion within the approved gestational range is approximately ninety-five percent.

Surgical Abortion: When It Is Used

Surgical abortion is used when medical abortion is contraindicated, when the gestational age exceeds the limit for medication-based termination, or when the patient prefers a surgical approach. Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA) is a gentle, effective method used in early to mid-first-trimester cases. It involves the use of a small handheld device to apply suction and is typically performed under local anaesthesia.

Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) is used in the second trimester and requires mild sedation or general anaesthesia. Both procedures are performed by qualified gynaecologists at registered facilities.

What to Expect After the Procedure

Following MTP, patients can expect some degree of cramping and bleeding for up to two weeks. The intensity and duration vary depending on the method used and the individual patient. Most patients are able to resume normal daily activities within one to three days, though strenuous exercise and sexual activity should be avoided for a recommended period.

A follow-up appointment is essential to confirm that the termination is complete and that there are no complications such as retained products of conception, infection, or excessive bleeding.

Contraception After MTP

Fertility returns quickly after a termination — often within two to four weeks — making contraceptive planning an important part of post-procedure care. A qualified doctor will discuss all available contraceptive options during the follow-up consultation and help the patient choose a method that is appropriate for their needs and circumstances.

For safe, legal, and compassionate support with medical termination of pregnancy in Delhi, connecting with a qualified and registered provider is the most important first step.
